I want to tell you a story.
A woman is sitting in a GP appointment. Elevated cortisol. Blood pressure slightly up. The doctor says to manage her stress and hands her a leaflet. She sits in the car afterwards and cries, and isn't entirely sure why.
It was not a crisis btw. No huge dramatic moment. It was a regular Tuesday afternoon. But something about having it confirmed in a clinical setting made it impossible to keep rationalising away.
I'm talking about me friends. This was me 13 years ago when I hit my first burnout. I went on to face a further episode years later.
Let me tell you what I know about that moment: the body had already been saying it for months. The fatigue that sleep did not fix. The getting ill the second the holiday started. The word that was not there in the meeting. The three am arithmetic of if "I fall asleep now I will get four hours forty minutes."
None of it felt like burnout because I was still functioning. Still delivering. Still fine by every external metric. I got an Outstanding from OFSTED during this time FFS. Insanity.
But my nervous system was not fine. It was running on cortisol and willpower and sending me signals I did not have the language for yet.
Chronic exhaustion and physical symptoms are not weakness. They are data. And learning to read them before the body has to shout is some of the most important work I do with clients.
