This week's hot topic π₯
This week we're talking about feelings, such strong feelings.
Hey Reader
Wow. You were all SO lovely last week about my last letter, thank you. I've been mulling over what to write about this week and the theme that keeps coming forward is about emotional intelligence.
Hear me out.
The ability to receive what someone is saying to you/ the energy they're sharing (good or bad) and be able to hit pause before you react might just be one of life's most underrated skills.
This week you may have seen my reel on instagram talking about a follower who blocked me because we disagree morally on some stuff (if you know me, you'll know where I stand on facism and racism I hope). Instead of engaging in a respectful discussion, she blocked me. And it knocked me for six. I couldn't name the feelings, so it took longer for me to understand and process the situation than I would have liked.
Me, the person who coaches people on this stuff for a living.
My day job outside of writing to you and posting on instagram is one that uses (and teaches) EQ all the time, but that doesn't mean I'm sh** hot at it.
Far from it.
The ability to catch the feeling, name it, and then choose how I respond is one I've had to learn over time (and I'm still working on it... hello road rage) I've been coaching people at work on this just recently, so here's the C-N-C framework for you:
The catch part is this: You notice how your body responds to the conflict, the change, the issue, the whatever. You start to sweat, your face gets flushed, your mouth goes dry, you want to burst into tears. Catch it. That's step one.
Then comes what people find the hardest, naming. This goes beyond 'I'm angry' to so much more. I use the feelings wheel for this one. It gives you the language to name so much more specifically exactly what's going on for you, and then use that to help you better choose how you're going to handle things.
β
Once you know how you're feeling, you can start to choose how you respond. Give it 24 hours. Ask for space. Say you need to think on it. Whatever you need to do, you're allowed to ask for it so you can show up in the way in which you intend.
On Monday I felt disrespected, dissapointed and if I'm honest, a little inferior. This followers message to me was pretty sh**. But something like CNC helped me sit with it, breathe, and show up online in the way I intended to - starting a healthy discourse with followers (new and cherished old!) in the comments about it all. That's much better than tagging her and calling her names - even if I may have wanted to ;)
We're living in increasingly volatile times. The ability to disagree well, and show up with intention, matters now more than ever.
